Our Recommended Equipment
Step 1: Computer or Table
Likely no surprise here, but something that is worth noting. However, with the advancements of recording software like GarageBand, the recording has become easier on other devices like iPads and Android Tablets. The short of it is, as long as you have some kind of UI to run recording software, that’s all you will need.
Step 2: Microphone
This could be the most surprising “must-have” for podcasting (only kidding). Microphones are essential to starting your podcast, and there are a lot of options out there. So we’ve gone ahead and narrowed it down in our previous gear review.

Step 3: Headphones
Like a microphone, you can take a lot of different routes when it comes to supplying yourself with headphones. I know quite a few podcasters that use just their basic earbuds that come with your mobile device. But if you are looking to kick it up a notch, I am a personal fan of the Sony MDR7506 headphones. They are applicable in a variety of use cases beyond podcasting and are usually under the $100 mark which makes them a good mid-level option. Not only is the sound quality fantastic but they are extremely comfortable for long recording and mixing sessions.
Although it isn’t essential or required for starting a podcast a mixer will certainly improve sound quality. A mixer will allow you to have more control over your audio mix and voice levels. When we started early on with the previously mentioned Liquid Courage podcast there were three of us who were speaking on 3 separate microphones. The mixing board made up for some of the imperfections along the recording journey. They will allow you to increase certain levels, mute, and make the overall process seamless. If you are looking to incorporate additional sound FX into your podcast a mixing board will make your life a lot easier.
