Southern Nightmare: The first DNA Case
Thirty years ago the South Side Strangler serial killer ravaged the city of Richmond, Virginia. The Southern Nightmare podcast goes in depth to the terrible crimes, and the eventual capture of the monster. Southern Nightmare is one of the best investigative journalist podcasts I have ever heard. You may not be familiar with the podcast, but it’s a hidden gem. I would not bother even reading the rest of this review…do yourself a favor and download this eight-episode masterpiece.
Richard Foster hosts the podcast and produced by Style Weekly magazine and WRIR 97.3 FM Richmond Independent Radio. Style Weekly has an eerie connection to the case–one of their employees was a victim of the South Side Strangler. The quality of the podcast, material, production, and narration sets it apart from any other investigative podcast to date.
The murder spree took place in the Richmond VA area in the 1980s and rocked the charming southern city. The podcast contains, court transcripts, interviews with victims and the investigators, and finally how the case came to an end. Besides the prolific terror hitting the area, the situation became a landmark in forensic investigation. The case is the first in the US history to convict a criminal based on DNA evidence. Richard takes the listener from the beginning to the end of the case, aided by intriguing interviews and disturbing facts.
I can not say enough good things about this podcast. Give this a download, and you will not be disappointed.
